İSTANBUL’S COMMERCIAL MEMORY

Turkey’s most modern and largest commercial archive, which has been established by İstanbul Chamber of Commerce, is in place to preserve the city’s 136 year old commercial history. ICOC Archive, which contains more than 10 million documents from 1 million and 500 thousand companies, is a trailblazer in its field for its filing system, security and technology.

İstanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICOC) brought into service a modern archive. The Chamber has eliminated another obstacle in commerce through ICOC Archive, where millions of documents from 1 million and 500 thousand companies. The merchants or public entities, which are in need of manually signed original documents and files aside from the archive kept electronically at ICOC’s premises, can, now, access such documents within a few minutes. The Archive, which is the first and the only address of İstanbul’s commercial memory, enables easy access to over 10 million documents.

A MODERN ARCHIVE – SAFE AND SECURE

A modern archiving system is employed at ICOC Archive, which has been developed and erected on a 1,810 square-meter closed area in Beylikdüzü, secured by 24/7 video surveillance. Protected against any kind of disasters; ICOC Archive is comprised of five floors of a volume of roughly 24 cubic-meters, 21 blocks and 9 thousand and 87 shelves.

Some 1,700 sets of documents on average are moved per day to ICOC Archive from the Chamber’s center.

300 THOUSAND FILES RESTORED

ICOC has been restoring some 300 thousand files dating back to 1882, from various companies, with a view to create a database. The restored files will shed light on a period of Turkey’s commercial history. The files of nearly 5 thousand boxes, which also include those issued in Ottoman Turkish, contain such details as the owners, shareholders and capitals of the companies.

THE NEW COMPLEX WILL BE THE STAMPING GROUND FOR GLOBAL FAIRS

ICOC has launched a new project, which will position İstanbul and Turkey as the largest fair organization hub of the region, and will carry the city to the top ranks in the global fair organization market.

The World Trade Center (WTC) İstanbul exhibition grounds, located in Yeşilköy, will be expanded into a modern trade complex. The tendering process for the first stage of the 205 thousand square-meter project is complete and will entail a 60 thousand square-meter exhibition area, 20 thousand square-meter foyer area and 30 thousand square-meters will be used as office space. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new WTC İstanbul exhibition grounds project is expected to be held shortly. The project, in ICOC’s 22nd President Çağlar’s words, is “a step that will carry the city to the top ranks in the global fair organization market.”

THE PROJECT IS TO POSITION TURKEY AS A REGIONAL HUB FOR CULTURAL ECONOMY

ICOC is launching Book City, a gigantic publication clustering project that will position Turkey as a regional hub for cultural economy.

The preparatory activities for İstanbul Chamber of Commerce’s Book City project, which will ensure the centralization of the media and publication industry, are in progress. The culture of Bab-ı Ali (Sublime Porte), which has been the very heart of publication since the Ottoman era, is being revived through Book City project to be extended to reach larger audiences.

The project, positioned nearby the 3rd airport, is envisaged to harbor all stakeholders of the industry from publishers to writers, newspapers to bookshops, and from printing houses to distributors. Three million square-meter project will be a publication clustering project that will position Turkey as a regional hub also in the field of cultural economy. The trademark ‘İstanbul Book City’ has been registered for the name of ICOC, and the project has already won Jeu d’Esprit Award as a part of 2017 AR Future Projects Awards at MIPIM 2017 Fair.

DİLŞAH KEFLİOĞLU

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan laid the foundation of Atatürk Cultural Center for its reconstruction project on 10 February 2019. The centre was opened after the completion of the project in 2.5 years.

The opera sphere in AKM’s entrance was built with 15 thousand unique handmade red ceramic tiles. The design of the building’s façade aimed maximum benefit from daylight, and a green roof system was applied with an environmental-friendly approach. The opera hall, named the grand hall, features a foyer with nearly 4 thousand 500 square meters and seats 2040 people. The pit in the lobby has sufficient size to host a massive orchestra of 118 people.

A MOVING STAGE

The stage mechanics and systems are built with the world’s leading technologies. They comprise a 65-meter stage depth, four main stage elevators, 13 compensator elevators in the side and backstages, and four mobile wagons that will remain above these. Besides, there is a rotating stage wagon in the main hall. All halls of AKM are furnished with top-level equipment in terms of acoustic, sound, lighting and displaying systems.

COMPRISES OF FIVE BLOCKS

AKM’s halls were designed acoustically, and the built orchestra shell offers an excellent sound quality in plays and concerts asa homage to original AKM’s ceramic artist Sadi Diren. The centre and the spiral staircase in the original centre’s foyer were restored to their original design. The centre comprises five blocks founded over a field of 30 thousand square meters, and AKM has an indoor space of 95 thousand square meters. The natural stone coating over the façade and internal venues of AKM draw attention.

A MODERN DESIGN

There are four basements with a total size of 48 thousand and 705 square meters, a stage, backstage rooms, foyer areas, workshop and storage areas, ballet practice lounges, practice rooms for soloists and orchestras, a recording studio, rehearsal rooms, art galleries and exhibition rooms and coffee shops. Furthermore, the rehearsal halls, recording studio, soloist and orchestra practice rooms were designed in a modern way acoustically.

DESCENDED FROM FATHER TO SON

Architect Hayati Tabanlıoğlu conducted the construction of AKM in 1956-1969, and it is one of the original premises of one of Taksim Square’s symbols. After the big fire in 1970, AKM opened again in 1977. The centre used to seat one thousand and three hundred people; however, it was transformed into a complex after the reconstruction by increasing its capacity and functions. Architect of the new AKM is the son of center’s original architect Hayati Tabanlıoğlu’s son, Murat Tabanlıoğlu.

A CULTURE STREET

As part of the AKM project, Culture Street includes an art gallery, movie theatre, restaurant, café, a book café, arts centre for children, a music platform, library, a design shop, and a multifunctional lounge.

Another significant aspect of the AKM project is that the centre gained a 24-hour living area to the neighbourhood with a connection from the Taksim Square to Istanbul Technical University’s Taşkışla Faculty and Atatürk Library. With the new centre, a second square will be formed in congress valley direction, where Atatürk Library and Istanbul Technical University remain.

MASTER’S DEGREE IN COMMERCIAL DIPLOMACY

Commercial Diplomacy Postgraduate Program is Türkiye’s first and only commercial diplomacy program. The program continues to accept applications. Commercial diplomacy is a vast area where negotiations in multiple aspects are carried out to solve disputes that hamper global trade.
